The Fossacolle 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva hits it out of the ballpark, both in terms of balance and intensity. That's not an easy tightrope to walk, but the ideal growing conditions of the 2016 growing season, which was long, warm and cool at the end, set the stage for this great success. The bouquet is strongly typical of Sangiovese with dried cherry, rose, earth and some grilled herb. This medium-bodied wine shows seamless transitions and a very silky quality of tannins to caress the palate. Sadly, only 1,400 bottles were produced.

The Fossacolle 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with a mere 2,000 bottles to be released after February 2021) offers richness and depth with a very linear and direct quality of fruit. There is plum, blackberry, spice, earth, leather and tar. This Riserva occupies the darker side of the spectrum, although the mouthfeel is ultimately lighter and more buoyant than you might expect.

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers plumpness and softness that you don't find as easily in the more acidic (and nervous) 2013 vintage. This vintage saw a warm and dry summer season, and those conditions tend to add more weight and textural heaviness to Sangiovese. This Riserva opens to a dark color and medium-rich concentration. The bouquet is fleshed out with red and purple fruit tones of cherry, plum and blackberry. The finish shows ample power and density.

Fossacolle's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another stellar wine from a stellar vintage. This Brunello opens to dark concentration and deep ruby highlights that add to the wine's overall weight and importance. The bouquet is composed of a fine aromatic embroidery with cherry, spice, tobacco and grilled herb. What distinguishes this wine in the end is its superb texture. This Riserva walks a fine line between elegance and power, and it does a great job of delivering both. That density and determination bodes well for its future aging potential.

A deft touch of new oak adds spice to the cherry, iron and tobacco flavors, bolstering the tannins and lending a hard, astringent edge to the finish. Best from 2016 through 2027. 195 cases made.??–BS??Region: Italy / Brunello di Montalcino Select to Add
