The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a huge, unoaked wine bursting with dark red fruit, sweet flower, spices, leather and licorice. The Cabernet Sauvignon saw no oak at all; the richness comes just from the intensity of the fruit. This is one of the very finest wines being made from Paso Robles fruit, and I say that after having tasted over 500 wines from Paso recently. Frankly, it puts most of what is being made in Paso in this price point to shame. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. I was blown away by the two wines I tasted from Foxglove, Bob and Jim Varner’s negociant label. The Varners clearly have the magic touch. Also a strong effort, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) was aged primarily in tank with a small amount in oak. It is a seductive, authentic tasting, slightly herbaceous Cabernet that is dominated by black currant and black cherry fruit notes.
