The 2009 Alka Carmenere reveals aromas of smoke, herbs, and baking spices bordering on green. On the palate it is narrow leading to a relatively short finish, particularly for a wine at its exalted price point. It has plenty of extract but comes off as disjointed. The 2007 Alka Carmenere (100%) is purple/black in color with a slightly exotic bouquet of underbrush, brier, pepper, clove, blackberry, and blueberry. On the palate, it is dense, plush, and soft (pH 4.05) but very tasty. It will not be winning any style points, but for pure enjoyment it is a winner. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. The 2005 Carmenere Alka offers a complex aromatic array of spice box, cigar wrapper, pencil lead, sage, and blueberry. Supple ripe and plush on the palate, this fleshy effort has plenty of flavor, good balance, and a pure finish. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020. The 2003 Alka is 100% Carmenere. It offers up an earthy, cedar and blueberry perfume with a whiff of mint in the background. Medium to full-bodied, it has layered, spicy flavors, firm tannins, and excellent balance.
