Coffee rinds and ripe cherry open the bouquet of the 2011 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. You can feel the heat of the vintage in the thickness and darkness of the wine. Dried blackberry skins are backed by a very large oak component of Indian spice, clove, cinnamon and espresso bean. Those lavish oak layers give the wine heft and power, but also feel heavy-handed. I’d suggest giving this wine a few more months of cellar aging to further integrate those loud oak tones.
