The 2008 Merlot Clanis is a big, powerful wine. The tannins lack a measure of elegance. This is the third vintage of the Merlot, which appears to still be a work in progress. The vines are still quite young. It will be interesting to see if the Merlot can reach the heights of the estate’s top wines. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2023. Giacomo Mori is one of my favorite under the radar estates in Tuscany. The 2006 Merlot Clanis reveals good plumpness but doesn’t offer a ton of expressiveness. This is neither fish nor fowl, as both varietal and regional definition seem murky at best. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
