At a mere 12% alcohol, Guy Breton’s 2011 Regnie displays correspondingly delightful lift and refreshment, its amalgam of fresh strawberry and red raspberry tinged with grenadine, kirsch distillate, and maraschino juices. Stimulatingly bitter hints of quinine, fruit pit and licorice lend counterpoint to the long finish of this low-alcohol, seamlessly refined and silken-textured fruit cocktail. You may say, “It’s pretty pricey for a Regnie,” but the fact is that some of the growers who have lately been demonstrating the outstanding potential of this cru need to both make a statement about its quality potential and recoup sufficient return to improve and expand their vineyards. I would tentatively plan on enjoying this beauty by 2015.
