The 2012 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Tempranillo is pure young Tempranillo used to break the new barrels for three to four months, showing the purple color and the exuberance of the young fruit with strawberries, raspberries, flowers and red licorice notes. A pleasure to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie. Refreshing and a real bargain. Drink 2014-2015.
The name might be misleading, as this winery was created in 2006. I guess they saw the growing interest for classical-style Rioja and went for it. They are not in Haro either, the winery is in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and I don’t really understand where the Lopez comes from, but truth is the wines are classical-styled, well made and have an attractive price tag. They seem to have expanded their range as I tasted a number of wines I had not encountered before.
