The 2018 Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling opens very intense and pure but also seemingly baroque on the nose that is populated with notes of crushed reddish stones, herbs, blossoms and ripe Riesling berry aromas. Creamy on the palate, this is a full-bodied and charming Riesling that seems more textured and musty than in the past and reveals some prominent oaky flavors and tannins that give it an unfinished character at this early stage straight after the bottling in mid-April. The wine is firm and intense but still not in balance and, obviously, hardly representative. I am curious to see where time will lead this substantial wine. I am going to re-taste it this summer and will give an update. Bottled with 10 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted from AP 183 20 in April 2020.

The 2017 Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling offers an intense, clear, pure and aromatic bouquet with perfectly ripe fruit aromas intertwined with the distinctive notes of red slate. Round and creamy textured yet crystalline and fresh, this is a medium to full-bodied, refined and elegant Steffensberg with a juicy, round and stimulating mineral finish. Excellent already today, but this 2017 can be aged for 12-25 years and probably longer. Tasted in October 2020.

From the ungrafted vines of the cru, the 2016 Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling has a beautifully pure, fresh and stony bouquet with nice spicy/oaky aromas, though the barriques are all old. "The Steffensberg always shows more oaky flavors compared to the other grand crus, although we always use different barriques," says Gernot Kollmann. Full-bodied, lush and juicy on the palate, this is a dry but round and elegant Riesling with a sensual character and charming smoothness. It's already digestible and, for that reason, is the most popular cru of Immich-Batterieberg. "This wine doesn't close. It's always lush and round," says Gernot.

The medium golden colored 2014 Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling is very elegant and complex on the coolish, refined and refreshing nose with ripe Riesling fruit aromas and very fine notes of crushed stones. Full-bodied, complete and elegant on the palate, this is a perfectly round yet pure, tight, dense, stimulating and refined dry Steffensberg with remarkable balance, graceful grip and harmony. 10.5% alcohol. Tasted in October 2020.
