The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione de Marchi is a stand out among the crop of new releases from Tuscany. It shows marvelous depth and richness without ever coming across as heavy. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and licorice add complexity to the fruit in this stunningly beautiful, impeccable Cabernet Sauvignon. Rosemary, grilled herbs and anise are layered into the powerful, dense finish. This is a distinctly Tuscan Cabernet that is just beginning to develop its aromatic complexity in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Paolo De Marchi does so many things well. His Sangiovese based wines are terrific. But it doesn’t stop there. The wines made from international varieties are equally compelling. As if that weren’t enough, the flagship Cepparello is one of the wines of the 2009 vintage. Add to that De Marchi’s intense passion for his hillside vineyards, and you have one of the most intriguing personalities in Italian wine. I can’t say enough good things about these new releases. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi is so exceptionally elegant and refined I have a hard time putting down the glass. At nearly six years of age, it remains an infant, with layers of dark red fruit that hover on a fabric of finely knit tannins. Dark raspberries, underbrush, menthol and licorice emerge gradually over time, yet this remains a very young wine in need of significant cellaring. Varietal aromas and flavors aren’t yet fully developed, and I am frankly not sure they ever will. Nevertheless, the Cabernet Sauvignon stands out for its fabulous balance and the great pleasure it affords, even at this infant stage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. De Marchi’s 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi is a powerful effort that reflects the qualities of this challenging vintage. Although it offers plenty of fruit and a full-bodied texture, it also possesses an imposing tannic structure. Bottle age may help to some extent but the 2003 doesn’t appear to have the elegance of the 2001 that was tasted alongside it. De Marchi says the wine’s tannic personality comes from grapes that were so dried out from the heat they contained very little juice. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018. The 2001 Cabernet De Marchi Collection is even more impressive, lovely in its focused and layered expression of blackberry fruit, vanilla, and minerals, savory in flavor, velvety in texture, and with the size and weight of a fine Medoc.
