The 2015 Nisia is from poor, sandy soils of Rueda. This small, 50-acre vineyard has produced a crisp, dry 100% Verdejo that is aged eight months sur lie in 500- to 600-liter demi-muids and 40% in stainless steel. Light straw in color with notes of poached pear, a honeyed citrus and marmalade note and a medium body. This crisp, fresh, refreshing, surprisingly intense dry white should drink well for another year.

A real winner from Bodegas Ordo?ez is the 2014 Nisia, which uses 100% Verdejo Old Vines, planted at one of the highest elevations of any Spanish appellation, 2,850 feet above sea level. This has sandy soils and Verdejo tends to love this. Fermented and aged in stainless steel or neutral French foudres, this wine is crisp, medium-bodied and shows delicate citrus, pear and a touch of white peach notes. It is steely, fresh and delicious. Jorge Ordo?ez has a small winery in Rueda with just over 38 acres of organically farmed vines, from which he produced the 2013 Nisia, a 100% old vine Verdejo. From vines situated at 2,850 feet above sea level, this 5,000-case cuvée was fermented in both stainless steel and French oak. The wine offers up crisp, elegant, white peach and citrus notes intermixed with loamy, sandy soil undertones, zesty acidity and a naked mouthfeel. Drink this beauty over the next several years. A killer project from importer Jorge Ordonez, the 2012 Nisia from Rueda is made from 100% old vine Verdejo. The 2011 Nisia is made from 100% old vine Verdejo (the youngest vines were planted in 1942, and others are nearly 100 years of age). The wine is aged sur-lie, and fermented in both stainless steel and large format French oak. It is undeniably one of the finest Verdejos I have ever tasted. Yields were less than three tons of fruit per hectare, which is noticeable in the wine’s old vine intensity. Notions of caramelized white citrus and tropical fruit blossoms along with a naked, natural texture as well as finish make for a terrific dry white with loads of personality and complexity. This beauty sells for an absurdly low price. Enjoy it over the next year. Production from the Rueda vineyard (38.3 acres) owned by Jorge Ordonez was begun in 2011. This well-known white wine appellation sits on the border of the province of Segovia. The 2010 and 2011 Zerran come from a vineyard planted at 1,500-1,800 feet altitude.
