The 2011 AD Libitum Maturana Tinta shows less dark color and riper, more aromatic aromas than most of the wines I’ve tasted from this enigmatic varietal, an obscure cousin of the Cabernet family called Castets in France, with perfumed notes of cherries, red licorice and ripe plums, with some spicy, pleasant peppery notes in the background and the wood impressively well-integrated into the wine. The palate is ripe and juicy, with silky tannins, and clean fruit flavors. I’d describe this as an Atlantic version of a Garnacha with some more volume. Very pleasant and approachable. Drink 2014-2017.
Juan Carlos Sancha has investigated about the new old Rioja varieties and produced one of the first examples of Tempranillo Blanco and Maturana Tinta. After working for different wineries, this is a young (created in 2008), small personal project where he produces no more than 25,000 bottles per year from 5.5 hectares of organic vineyards around his winery in the village of Banos de Rio Tobia in the coldest part of Rioja Alta in the Najerilla valley and a small plot of old-vine Garnacha planted in 1917. He’s come up with a clever way to produce and age his reds in rotating 500-liter oak barrels. This is a name to watch.
