The 2001 Gisele, the house Merlot, is not quite at the level of the sumptuous 1997, but it still counts as one of the important red wines of the zone with its smoky and plummy nose. It also features incense and sandalwood in its lovely broad and ample palate. It is mouth-filling and sweet, with a plushy, caressing texture on the finish. Drink: 2005-2014. This estate's most expensive cuvee, the 2000 Gisele, is a 100% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak. It offers international aromatics of espresso beans, chocolate, mocha, blackberries, and cherries in addition to such Tuscan characteristics as tar, leather, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, and impressive, it will drink well between 2005-2014. A word of warning, two bottles tasted were corked. The blockbuster 1999 Gisele is an exotic, over-the-top style of Merlot that is reminiscent of the provocative Pomerols produced by Le Pin and Clinet (especially those from the late eighties). The opaque purple-colored, full-bodied, multi-layered, unctuously-textured, fabulous Gisele boasts a fascinating nose of espresso, blackberries, mocha, smoke, and minerals. New oak is noticeable, but this component will ultimately be absorbed by the luxurious wealth of fruit and glycerin. This wine offers profound evidence of my belief that the only place in the world other than Bordeaux where phenomenal Merlot can consistently be grown is Tuscany. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015. The 1998 Gisele (100% Merlot) is a dark ruby/purple-colored offering made in an international style. It possesses highly-extracted fruit, toasty new oak, smoke, and coffee-tinged, berry and cherry fruit. It should drink well for a decade.
