The Le Ragose 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a beautifully executed, balanced and elegant expression from an iconic vintage. The traditional blend is 50% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella and 10% other complementary grapes. The wine spends up to 18 months in steel vat and is racked over to botte for a very long aging period lasting from six to eight years. It then sees another year in bottle before it is released to the market. The wine is forthcoming and bright with a smooth succession of aromas that range from dark fruit and plum to spice, tar, cola, grilled earth and balsam herb. The integration is polished and careful. This is a knockout Amarone (with 16% alcohol) from Le Ragose. Production is 12,000 bottles.

Seeing 90 days of appassimento, this blend of 50% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella and 10% other mixed grapes was first made in 1969, and this Amarone has followed a very traditional approach ever since. The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a bit drier than its peers (with just 1.56 grams per liter of residual sugar) and carries savory tones of dark fruit, leather, spice and tobacco. The wine ages in stainless steel for the first 12 months and then goes into 50-hectoliter barrels for an additional 72 months. This vintage shows just enough freshness to assure you that this 11-year-old Amarone will hold for another decade. Some 45,000 bottles were made.

Here's a beautiful wine that offers a powerful blast of black fruit intensity. The 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a very intricate wine despite all that muscle and brawn that acts as a momentary distraction when you first approach the bouquet. You'll get tertiary aromas of dried fruit and liquid smoke, with pretty mineral definition as well. There is a brief moment of sweetness that is quickly followed by savory tones of spice, tar and licorice.
