The 2008 Luberri Cepas Viejas produced from grapes of Tempranillo vines averaging 60 years old and aged for fourteen months in barrel is a powerful, concentrated wine with notes of dark plums, blackberries and wild berries, plenty of balsamic notes of Mediterranean herbs and a whiff of smoke. The palate shows very good acidity, purity of flavors and great length. A powerful Rioja. Drink 2014-2019. This family winery was created in 1991 by Florentino Martinez Monje in Rioja Alvesa and they now own 35 hectares of vineyards and work a further 15 to produce a grand total of 350,000 bottles per year. The blockbuster 2001 Finca Los Merinos Cepas Viejas was fashioned from 70-year old vines and aged 16 months in new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. It boasts a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to a smoky nose of graphite, espresso roast, chocolate, black currants, cherries, and vanilla.
