The 2011 Seis de Luberri is pure 40-year-old Tempranillo aged in barrique for six months (hence its name, “seis”means six). Bright ruby-colored, the red fruit and flower aromas jump out of the glass. The sharp palate reveals a juicy wine with very good acidity, with elegance, not so complex, but easy to drink. A wine of pleasure. Drink 2014-2017. This family winery was created in 1991 by Florentino Martinez Monje in Rioja Alvesa and they now own 35 hectares of vineyards and work a further 15 to produce a grand total of 350,000 bottles per year. The 2008 Seis de Luberri spent 6 months in French and American oak. It offers up an inviting nose of cedar, leather, violets, spice box, and assorted black fruits. Already revealing a bit of complexity, this elegantly-styled Rioja has the balance and concentration to drink well through 2018. Luberri is located in El Ciego in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. The estate consists of 35 hectares of old vines. All three wines presented (100% Tempranillo) are excellent to outstanding values. The 2006 Seis de Luberri is 100% Tempranillo sourced from the estate’s younger vines. It was aged in French and American oak for six months. It delivers a complex aromatic array of cedar, tobacco, leather, red pepper, and blackberry. This is followed by an easy-going, smooth-textured Rioja with plenty of savory, spicy fruit, good depth, and a medium-long finish. Drink it over the next six years.
