Blended of 85% Mourvedre and 15% Shiraz, the 2009 -Black Sock- Mourvedre has a medium-deep garnet-purple color and earthy, evolving aromas of dusty dirt, warm plums, sandalwood, mulberries and leather. Medium bodied with just enough fruit in the mouth, it has a medium level of chewy tannins, crisp acid and a long earthy / gamey finish. Drink this one now to 2015. 2008 Black Sock Mourvedre is 85% Mourvedre with 15% Shiraz added. Pale to medium garnet in color, it displays intense blackberry and mulberry aromas with some warm plum, earth and whiff of spice box. Full and dense in the mouth, the rich flesh is well supported with medium to firm grainy tannins and high acidity, finishing long. Drinking well now, it should continue to cellar to 2016+. Magpie Estate is a joint venture between the talented Barossa based produced Rolf Binder and UK wine merchant Noel Young. Coming through some difficult vintages, the line-up here remains solid with some very good to excellent wines to recommend. Note that no 2007 or 2008 Gomersal Grenache or Malcolm Shiraz were produced though a sneak-preview of barrel samples of the 2009 vintage of these wines promises something special to come.Importer: Total Beverage Solutions, Mount Pleasant, SC

The 2006 Black Sock Mourvedre is purple-colored with a nose of wood smoke, mineral, forest floor, blueberry, and Asian spices. Already revealing some complexity, this sweet, savory effort has a firm finish and the structure to evolve for 3-5 years. It will be in its prime from 2012 to 2022. The 2005 Mourvedre “The Black Sock” contains 15% Shiraz. It was aged in seasoned American oak puncheons. It offers a complex aromatic array of cedar, forest floor, truffle, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with layers of spicy black fruits, excellent balance, and a long, fruit-filled finish. Give it 2-3 years to evolve and drink it through 2015.
