The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is also very charming, wafting from the glass with scents of peonies, orange rind, cedar spices and subtle red berry fruit. Medium-bodied, lively and melting, with powdery tannins and succulent acids, it concludes with a melting finish.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets reveals aromas of dark berries, wild blueberries, forest floor and potpourri, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant palate that's pretty and precise, built around chalky tannins. It's more ethereal than the richer, more muscular Santenots.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, including two-thirds whole bunch, has a nicely detailed bouquet with bright black cherry and blackcurrant scents, very pure and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red and black fruit, hints of fig in the background with a vivacious, blood orange-tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent.

The maiden 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, one new barrel out of three, comes from 0.5-hectare of vines with lots of Pinot Fin. The bouquet is very precise with fine mineralité, touches of slate permeating the red berry fruit. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, nice tension here with the details and clarity conveyed by the Clos des Ducs. This is a very finely tuned, tensile Volnay that should age with aplomb.
