The 2011 San Donato (50% Pinot Noir and 50% Gamay) is a very pretty wine laced with sweet dark cherries, licorice, tobacco and violets. Firm yet harmonious tannins give the wine much of its energy. With a little more focus in the bouquet, this could be a significantly better wine. It remains a fabulous value, and one of the most unique wines being made in Tuscany today. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. These four wines from Pancrazi are all attractive. The 2010 San Donato (Gamay, Pinot Noir) is quite pretty in this vintage. Soft cherries, crushed flowers and spices are some of the notes that waft from the glass in this pretty, delicate red. Served slightly chilled, it would make a great summer time red. Even better, it is a terrific value. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. These four wines from Pancrazi are all attractive. Marchesi Pancrazi’s 2008 S. Donato (Pinot Noir, Gamay) is a fruity mid-weight red to drink over the next year or two. Ideally it needs to be opened at least 30 minutes in advance to allow for some imperfections in the bouquet to blow off. The S. Donato keeps getting better and better with air, and it will likely be at its finest when enjoyed at the dinner table. Sweet candied cherries linger on the finish. Pinot Noir and Gamay are not typically found in Tuscany. The S. Donato remains one of the region’s most quirky yet intriguing bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Marchesi Pancrazi's entry-level 2006 San Donato is a unique blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, two varieties one doesn't run into often in Tuscany. In fact, Pancrazi owns what are probably the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Tuscany and has been a steadfast supporter of Pinot for decades. The wine presents a profile of bright, high-toned aromas and flavors with excellent persistence on the palate, if not quite the generosity that so many Tuscan wines have in this important vintage.
