Only the 1992 can compete with this 2001 Pinot Nero, with much ruby along with the more conventional garnet in its color, a fragrant, elegant nose of red berry fruit, mint and other green herbs, and a bit of saddle leather, and smooth, polished flavors which combine a lithe strength with a silky texture. Drink: 2005-2012.
Vittorio Pancrazi was somewhat perplexed when the Sangiovese which he had ordered from an Italian vine nursery gave grapes which ripened in early September, a month ahead of schedule, but his consulting winemaker Niccolo D’Afflitto was able to solve the puzzle fairly quickly. The “Sangiovese” was actually Pinot Noir, and the wine from these grapes has regularly been one of Italy’s best Pinot’s ever since the 1988 vintage.
