The 2009 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore offers up crushed flowers, spices, mint, leather and tobacco, all of which come together in a highly appealing mid-weight style. The Valmaggiore shows lovely aromatic intensity, refined fruit and well integrated tannins. It is a beautiful, totally harmonious wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. The 2008 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is another beautiful wine. It reveals surprising depth for this site, with notable complexity in its dusty cherries, dried flowers, herbs and spices. This is a typical Nebbiolo from Alba as seen through a lens of low yields and meticulous attention to quality. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. Proprietor Marco Marengo has been crafting superb Baroli for some time now, but his entry-level wines have been less consistently reliable.
