The Mourvèdre-dominated (85%) 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Tintot starts off with peppery, almost floral nuances on the nose, but the fruit here comes across as a bit overdone, marked by notes of prunes and dark chocolate. It's full-bodied, loaded with ripe tannins and boasts a long, velvety finish. It's concentrated, and there's a lot here to like, but it's perhaps not quite as fresh as it could be.

I applaud wineries that try to do things a little differently, and I think Mourvèdre has a huge role to play in Chateauneuf du Pape. That said, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot (85% Mourvèdre, the rest Grenache) is slightly overripe to my tastes, with dark, dried-fruit flavors and alcoholic warmth both in evidence. The tannins are rich and supple, but the spice cake, prune and date flavors lack freshness and length.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot (100% Mourvedre) comes close to equaling Manfred Krankl and Philippe Cambie’s debut release of Chimere, which is also virtually all Mourvedre. If you can not find Chimere on retailers’ shelves, check out the 2010 Le Tintot as there are about 2,000 bottles produced. An amazing expression of fully ripe Mourvedre, it offers up notes of steak tartare, porcini mushrooms, blueberries, blackberries, charcoal and camphor. Incredibly dense and full-bodied with no hard edges (noteworthy for a 100% Mourvedre cuvee), this stunning wine needs 5-6 years of cellaring, and should keep for 40+ years. This tiny 22-acre estate situated in the northern tier of Chateauneuf du Pape was founded in 1950, but has been brought to brilliance by Chaussy family over the last decade. Daniel Chaussy deserves enormous credit for introducing the spectacular Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet as well as the Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot, which is 100% Mourvedre. Both the 2007 and 2010 Cuvee du Quet have garnered perfect scores, and the latter wine may be the wine of the vintage. Sadly, only 5,000 bottles are produced of this extraordinary blend of 80% Grenache (aged in neutral tanks) and 20% Mourvedre (aged in small oak casks). The opaque black/purple-colored 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot possesses enormous concentration as well as lots of garrigue, new saddle leather, blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with a hint of roasted meats. This huge, bigger-than-life 2010 needs 5-8 years of cellaring and should keep for 25-30+ years. (Not yet released)This 22-acre estate is on top of its game thanks to the efforts of the brilliant brother and sister team of Daniel and Christine Chaussy, who have been hitting all the high notes for the last 15 or more years. There are three cuvees of red Chateauneuf du Pape, and I would suggest that 2009 and 2010 are the finest back-to-back vintages produced to date (although one can not forget the prodigious 2007s turned out by the Chaussys). The 2010s are brilliant efforts across the board, potentially even better than the 2009s, and certainly more structured with higher acids and more aging potential. Kudos to Daniel and Christine Chaussy, who, by the way, are well-worth visiting should you venture into the northern tier of Chateauneuf du Pape where all their vineyards are located, just south of the ancient Roman town of Orange.Importer: Alain Junguenet, Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ; tel. The 100% Mourvedre cuvee, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Tintot is a tiny cuvee of just under 300 cases that was aged in 1-3 year old small oak barrels. It is another great example of the heights Mourvedre can achieve in Chateauneuf du Pape. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, cassis and hints of jus de viande and bouquet garni with extraordinary structure, intensity, power and length. In the finish, the tannins kick in, so this is a cuvee for serious connoisseurs who are willing to give it 5-6 years of cellaring. It will drink well over the following 25-30+ years. This 22-acre estate is on top of its game thanks to the efforts of the brilliant brother and sister team of Daniel and Christine Chaussy, who have been hitting all the high notes for the last 15 or more years.
