The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon flows across the palate with dark berries, espresso, mocha, grilled herbs and sweet spices, all of which come together in a soft, sumptuous style that is very appealing. Ripe, silky tannins typical of the vintage support the fruit all the way through to the long, generous finish. The 2009 spent 18 months in French oak barrels and is the first vintage made with the consulting services of Paul Hobbs. This is a terrific showing from Merus. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Tel. Patience, patience, and more patience is mandated by the 2008. A blend of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon, .5% Malbec and .5% Petit Verdot reveals an opaque blue/purple color in addition to abundant graphite, vanillin, blueberry and blackberry aromas. Built for the long haul, it is a concentrated, dense, promising Cabernet along the lines of the great wines made at Merus since its founding by Mark Herold (who is now pursuing other projects). Tasted too late to make it into the December issue, Merus’s 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of blueberry liqueur intermixed with graphite, charcoal, cassis, and spice. The wood seems pushed to the background given the extraordinary concentration of fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich with chocolaty espresso notes intermixed with blackberries and blueberries, this pure, impressively textured, long Cabernet should evolve for two decades.Tel.
