The Monchiero Carbone 2017 Roero Srü is a mid-weight wine with touches of chalky earth and crushed granite. I love those earthy tones, and it's great that you get so many of them here. The fruit is downplayed with wild berries and some sweet rose. I am less enthusiastic about the tannins, which feel dry and astringent. Many wines from the hot and dry 2017 vintage (that produced smaller, more concentrated berries) show that distinctive tannic tightness. I'm on the fence, because I'd go up a few points for the beauty of the bouquet, but then I subtracted a few for the dryness of the mouthfeel.
