The dense ruby/purple-colored 2008 Syrah exhibits a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, wild berry fruit, lavender, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and luscious, it is ideal for drinking over the next 4-5 years. From the Lee family, who also runs the reliable Siduri winery, they have produced four outstanding Syrahs from their fruit acquisitions in the Santa Lucia Highlands.Tel. (707) 578-3882

Robust, full bodied and frankly delicious, this is a great value in an upscale Syrah. It’s bone dry, but exceptionally rich in blackberry and cherry-pie filling, currant, licorice, bacon, sandalwood and pepper flavors that are deep and long in the finish. The 2007 Syrah is a textbook effort revealing notes of pepper, forest floor, black olives, earth, and copious black fruits. It is a fleshy, round, dense wine with gorgeous purity as well as a long, heady finish. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years. Novy, the moniker for Siduri’s Rhone Ranger operation, has produced their strongest lineup to date, four sensational 2007 Syrahs produced from purchased fruit. For pure value, these wines are hard to beat. The top two 2006 Syrahs I reviewed last year from Novy Family Vineyards were the Garys’ Vineyard and Rosella Vineyard, both from the Santa Lucia Highlands. They were well over 90-point wines and the picks of the litter. The following group is much less impressive than those two wines or the Novy portfolio of 2007s.
