The 2007 Expatriate Shiraz was sourced from 65 year old vines yielding a meager 1 ton per acre of fruit. The wine spent 20 months in 100% new French oak. Purple-colored, it displays an expressive nose of toasty new oak, scorched earth, pencil lead, espresso, violets, and assorted black fruits. This is followed by a full-bodied, velvety textured, rich Shiraz with enough well-concealed tannin to evolve for 2-3 years. This round, savory, lengthy effort will drink well through 2022. The 2006 Expatriate Shiraz was originally reviewed in Issue 173 as a barrel sample. While not quite as inspiring as I thought it might be, it is still a very high-quality effort. Sourced from a 65-year-old vineyard yielding only one ton of fruit per acre, it was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple/black colored, it offers up a superb aromatic array of pain grille, bacon, violets, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Big, rich, round and plush. A plump mouthful of plum, blueberry, cream and spice flavors that pull together and finish with a bit of elegance, seduction and charm. Has great power and depth, but this keeps it all in balance so it doesn't hit you hard.
