The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio (with 8,000 bottles made) shows the weight and extra concentration of a hot vintage, and the bouquet lacks the clarity of a cool growing season. This wine delivers bulk and a bold approach to the palate with rich fruit, cherry liqueur and rum raisin. This growing site enjoys southwest exposures with mineral-rich soils with iron, zinc and magnesium.

From a long growing season that allowed Nebbiolo grapes to mature in a stress-free environment, the Orlando Abrigo 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio shows subtle power that slowly builds the vertical intensity of this pretty wine. The bouquet puts on a delicate display of wild berry, blue flower, tarry smoke, rust and aniseed. This Riserva is born in a two-hectare plot with calcareous soils and veins of iron-rich clay. These conditions lead to the tightly knit and firm mouthfeel. This is a 7,000-bottle production.

The Orlando Abrigo 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio was born in a two-hectare vineyard site at 350 meters above sea level that is not part of the official MGA designations. The site sees lots of clay and iron in its soils. With 8,000 bottles released, the wine is exuberant and generous in terms of its dark fruit concentration and the much richer and softer textural impression it leaves on the palate. It finishes on a long, silky note and should definitely go the distance.

From a proprietary vineyard with 50-year-old vines, the Orlando Abrigo 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio is a late-release wine and the estate's banner bottle. This is a controversial vintage that was plagued by rain and below-average temperatures for most of the summer. However, the Barbaresco appellation is one of the few wine regions in Italy that emerged relatively unscathed. This Riserva is tight and tonic. The wine is guided by a point of tannic firmness, but it also shows evolved berry fruit and dark cherry aromas. I'd suggest a medium-term drinking window.

The 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Rongalio is a heavy and dark expression from Orlando Abrigo. This producer regularly seems to put more emphasis on muscle than finesse. In the case of this Barbaresco, it feels blocky, heavy and one-dimensional compared to the non-Riserva expressions from the 2016 vintage also tasted here. The Rongalio vineyard is planted to 50-year-old vines with south and southwest positions. The name of the site, Rongalio, is a registered trademark that belongs to the Abrigo family. Only 5,000 bottles were made.
