The 2009 Barbaresco Montersino is beautifully dark, rich and inviting. Layers of deep, baritone fruit fill out a broad-shouldered frame as this expansive wine shows off its considerable personality. The tannins are very nicely balanced in this vintage. Hints of tobacco, licorice and spices add complexity as the wine continues to open up in the glass. This is an impressive showing from Abrigo. The 2008 Barbaresco Montersino is a pretty, approachable wine with lovely juiciness in its sweet red fruit, flowers and spices. It shows gorgeous inner perfume and mid-palate pliancy to match its appealing personality. This is a fine choice for near-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Once again Orlando Abrigo’s Barbareschi are terrific. As for the entry level wines, well, that is another matter entirely. Let’s just say there is an abyss in quality from the simpler wines to those from the more prestigious appellations, and that just doesn’t happen at a top estate. The 2007 Barbaresco Montersino is the richest wine in this lineup. Layers of dark fruit, spices, menthol and French oak are wrapped around a powerful, intense frame. This shows superb richness and depth, even if a few more years in bottle are needed for the French oak to fully harmonize. The wine’s balance and persistence are first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. This year I tasted a wide range of wines from Abrigo, a small producer who seems to do his best work with Nebbiolo.
