The Pace 2016 Roero Riserva is quite dry with aromas of biscuit, pie crust and air-dried fruit. There's a hint of apple or cherry skin that suggests some mild oxidation or evolution. Otherwise, the 2016 vintage delivers balance, strength and freshness. These are the three basic building blocks of the classic 2016 vintage.

The Pace 2011 Roero Riserva is a dark and emboldened expression of Nebbiolo. Black currant, spice, tobacco and campfire ash appear on the bouquet. The oak element is very evident, almost too much so. This wine is aged in oak barrels for 15 months.

Earthy, rusty notes open this Roero Riserva and segue to dark fruit and prune. This Nebbiolo-based wine does, however, present a softer, more yielding mouthfeel than you might expect for the naturally astringent grape variety. ——M.L.(9/1/2011)—— 86
