The 2005 Barolo is a gorgeous, harmonious wine endowed with notable purity in its fruit. Today it comes across as rather soft and accessible – qualities shared by many Barolos in this vintage – with lovely inner perfume and tons of poise. Sweet notes of tobacco, licorice and menthol add complexity on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. There is a purity to proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s wines that I find incredibly appealing. These three Barolos are essentially different selections, all from the Ginestra vineyard in Monforte. Fermentation takes place using the traditional submerged cap method, after which the Barolos are aged in large, neutral French oak barrels, an approach that works beautifully with the intensely spiced and aromatic Ginestra fruit. The 2004 Barolo is simply gorgeous. This mid-weight Barolo reveals a dark, translucent color along with a seamless expression of ripe red fruit, flowers and spices. This is an especially soft, accessible Barolo in this vintage, and it is drinking beautifully even at this early stage. This is also an unusually refined Barolo at this level. The fruit for this wine is a second selection from Conterno’s holdings in the Ginestra vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014. I have been a big fan of proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s wines for some time. Over the years these have become increasingly elegant Barolos, particularly in their refined tannins, much of which can be attributed to a more enlightened use of French oak. At press time Conterno was in the process of changing his US importer.

Fresh floral aromatics with pure, spicy fruit. Tannins are delicately grippy. Fragrant, elegant, dry finish.

Very pretty aromas of sandalwood and berry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with cedar and berry character and a refined finish. Integrated and silky. Not imported into the U.S. Best after 2010. 335 cases made.??–JS??Region: Italy / Piedmont / Barolo Select to Add
