The Paolo Conterno 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Bric Ginestra is an easy, stripped-down expression of the mighty Piedmont grape Nebbiolo. The bouquet is simple and rather one-dimensional but pleasing nonetheless with wild berry, rose and a sure hint of rusty nail. This bottle is a great candidate to pair next to a classic roasted chicken just like grandma used to pull out of the oven. Unfortunately, only 3,000 bottles were produced.

Very elegant and tight, the 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo Bric Ginestra is a very nice drinking wine, if thinner in the mouth than other expressions of Nebbiolo from this producer. There's not as much persistency, and the mouthfeel is a bit shorter, but it tends to compensate for that with its rich fruit flavor profile that veers toward blackberry and ripe cherry tones. You feel some of the density and softness of this hot vintage. You might even pair it with some sweet barbecued chicken.

The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo Bric Ginestra is a middle-tier wine that offers the graceful informality that is appropriate for the family dinner table and the background intensity that grabs your attention on an intellectual level. The wine is solid and shapely with plenty of dark fruit and cassis that segues to spice, smoke and dark rose petal. As far as Langhe Nebbiolo goes, this wine is a superstar. Too bad only 3,000 bottles were made.

Paolo Conterno makes several lovely expressions of Langhe Nebbiolo that offer you a window onto the grape without the austerity (or the expense) of Barolo. Among the most successful is the 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo Bric Ginestra. This wine presents clean and focused layers of wild berry, cherry, spice and leather. The texture is lean and compact with silky smoothness that is reinforced by the integrated tannins. An added bonus is the delightful endnote of brimstone and underbrush that adds an undeniable touch of elegance and pedigree. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018. The 2008 Langhe Nebbiolo Bric Ginestra is a more serious wine than the straight Langhe Nebbiolo. Dark cherries, spices, licorice and a host of balsamic nuances flow from the glass. The firm tannins add notable persistence to the finish and suggest another year or two of bottle age is probably wise. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s strength lies with the Nebbioli from his holdings in the Ginestra vineyard.
