The 2010 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is an old vine blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah aged in both stainless steel and 600-liter demi-muids (about 25%). Its dense, opaque color is followed by copious notes of black fruits, white chocolate, tobacco leaf and earth. This serious estate in Rasteau has produced a beautiful 2005 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes that is deep ruby/purple, chocolatey, full-bodied, and powerful with plenty of new saddle leather and berry fruit. It is a big, mouth-staining wine that should drink well for up to a decade. The 2004 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is much more evolved than the 2005 but cut from the same mold. Deep ruby/plum/purple with notes of chocolate, creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, and plenty of licorice and scorched earth, it is medium to full-bodied, much softer than the 2005, and ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years. The 1998 Cotes du Rhone Villages Beau Mistral Vieilles Vignes (a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre) is a rustic effort, offering chunky, chocolatey, scorched earth flavors, black cherry and plum notes, and high tannin in the finish. While it possesses an uncivilized character, it is big, substantial, and mouthfilling. Drink it over the next 3-5 years.
