This wine will hit the market this October. The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a beauty with bright and crunchy fruit that is impossible to ignore. If a Rosso can taste so good, we have great things to look forward to when the 2016 Brunellos hit the market in under two years' time. From a farming point of view, 2016 was not as easy as the no-brainer 2015 growing season. This vintage had more rain and mildew-related issues. Some vineyard spots even saw damaging hail. Pian dell'Orino made more Rosso and IGT wine in 2016 to make up for these challenges. But the UV light and the luminous quality of 2016 sparked magical results, says Pian dell'Orino proprietor Jan Hendrik Erbach. The fruit is glossy, firm and pure.

I tasted the 2015 and 2016 vintages of this wine side by side and am therefore in a position to compare the two in real time. The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino shows more thickness, more fiber, more fruity succulence and spice. Of course, this is absolutely characteristic of this warm and sunny vintage. This was a textbook growing season, with rain coming at the right time and ripening proceeding on schedule. This Rosso offers pretty cherry fruit and blackberry. You get some of that crunchiness that I often associate with Sangiovese. This wine was released in October 2018.

This is the only new release from Pian dell’Orino at this time. The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is bright and crisp with wild berry fruit, earthy notes and a drying touch of crushed mineral. That firm acidic grip is very important to the overall intensity and length of this centered Rosso. These are results of which to be proud. The alcoholic impact is moderate, making this wine easy to drink over the course of a long meal.

Showing great depth and a clean, tonic style, the 2013 Rosso di Montalcino is streamlined and tight with bright berry fruit that emerges high and tall from the bouquet. The wine's intensity is very evident especially when tasted next to Pian dell'Orino's IGT Sangiovese. The quality of fruit is fresh and pronounced and like all of the wines from this estate, this expression is characterized by an extremely polished and silky approach. It reaches seamless integration.

The spectacular 2011 Rosso di Montalcino sees fruit sourced from the organic Bassolino vineyard in the southern part of the appellation. The wine shows enormous definition and focus with bright berry layering and fresh menthol at the end. Firm Sangiovese structure holds it together. Drink: 2014-2018. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach run a tight ship at Pian dell’Orino. I had a chance to taste through barrels in their circular winery and it was here that I began to develop my happy expectations concerning the 2012 vintage. I also learned that this industrious couple who chose to live in Montalcino from distant lands (they fell in love here), had recently embarked on an ambitious mapping effort to delineate the four quadrants of the appellation according to soil and other factors. This is a project they started and funded on their own. I sincerely hope that the map they have produced leads to a greater dialogue on the need for recognized sub zones in Montalcino.
