Along with dark fruit aromas, the 2012 Chianti Rufina Riserva presents uncommon tertiary aromas of dark spice, natural rubber and petrol. The bouquet requires a minute or two of vigorous swirling to reach a point of smoother integration. In the mouth, the wine is silky and polished. It might flesh out further, but at this point it remains informal and lean. Grapes are harvested from 60-year-old Sangiovese vines and a few plants of ancient indigenous varieties such as Ciliegiolo, Mammolo and Abrostine are found planted within.

An elegant old school wine, the 2011 Chianti Rufina Riserva opens to beautiful tones of delicate spice, wild berry, prune, dried blackberry and tobacco leaf. The wine shows dark color and concentration with sweet endnotes of cherry and cassis. The most attractive aspect to the wine, however, are the bright notes of balsam herb, rosemary oil and dried ginger that rise with intensity from the glass. This is a very beautiful and elegant wine representing the Chianti Rufina appellation. You really can't beat this excellent value.

This riserva from the Rufina region (from old vines) shows bright acidity and very fine nuances of forest berry, cranberry, white almond and blue flowers. There’s a medicinal element that recalls cola or chopped herbs on the close.——M.L.(2/1/2012)—— 89
