Generally speaking, the 2011 Riservas from Montalcino show good, but not always consistent results across the board. One of the new discoveries in this tasting is the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from Podere la Vigna. I liked the velvety nature of the wine and its satisfying richness. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit nuances followed by spice, tobacco and cured meat. The wine is savory and rich with a touch of cherry sweetness on the robust finish.

This powerful, opulent red offers a heady mix of plum, cherry, fruitcake and baking spices, with a touch of tobacco. Fleshy and concentrated, revealing sweet fruit at the core and firm yet refined tannins for support. Shows fine length, ending with a fresh aftertaste. For fans of the modern style.
