Poggio al Sole's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with plums, tobacco, camphor, incense and sweet tobacco. It shows gorgeous depth and richness all the way through to the textured finish. With a nice balance of varietal character and Tuscan typicity, this is a terrific showing. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as excessively heavy and forced. An initial blast of big, jammy fruit is followed by a mid-palate and finish that lack continuity. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, enveloping wine that caresses the palate with waves of dark fruit. Smoke, grilled herbs and wild cherries come to life on this impeccable, long Cabernet Sauvignon. The finish is soft, round and generous. The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon can be enjoyed today for its primary fruit, but readers who enjoy more tertiary complexity and finer tannins that should develop in bottle will want to give this a few years in the cellar.
