The Sangiovese-based 2010 Rubio shows considerable depth in this vintage. It is an attractive wine for many reasons, including its very fair price. The 2009 Rubio bursts from the glass with layers of dark fruit that build with notable intensity. This plump, engaging wine is a huge overachiever in its price range. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. San Polo is in the midst of a huge turnaround since new owners Leonardo LoCascio and Marilisa Allegrini purchased the property in 2007. Consulting oenologist Riccardo Cotarella has been brought in to add his expertise. The 2008 Rubio shows lovely depth and richness in its sweet cherries, mint and flowers. This attractive, fresh red possesses gorgeous balance and richness in what is shaping up as an uneven vintage in Montalcino. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. Wow, what a beautiful wine and what an attractively low price. Rubio offers excellent value with deeply fruity tones of cherry, blackberry and cassis. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the back and the wine is smooth, generous and silky. ——M.L.(4/1/2011)—— 92
