The French oak-aged 2004 Sant’Antimo Mezzopane (65% Merlot, 35% Sangiovese) is a powerful, rustic wine loaded with super-ripe dark fruit, earthiness and game flavors, an impression that is reinforced by the wine’s coarse and generally unpolished personality. The aromas and flavors are already somewhat advanced, suggesting the wine won’t be especially long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. Poggio San Polo is a new property owned by Marilisa Allegrini, best known for the wines her family produces in Veneto, and importer Leonardo LoCascio, one of the early pioneers in importing high-quality Italian wines into the US. Winemaking is overseen by consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini.A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selections, Winebow, Montvale, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
