The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia (a certified organic wine made with 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino) offers a balanced sense of richness with velvety fruit sensations, black plum, grilled herb and blue flower. That delicate floral note and a slightly sweet mineral note is often found in wines from San Casciano Val di Pesa.

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia enjoys a strong connection to the historic roots of the estate winery located in the underground ramparts of a Tuscan Renaissance castle. The wine is aged in large oak casks that are almost 30 years old, as they were installed in 1994. Duccio Corsini tells me that 2018 was a "complicated vintage" with almost tropical-like rains in June and July. The team worked hard to maintain cover crops of chamomile, clover and legumes to optimize organic farming. This wine is Sangiovese with a touch of Colorino. The wine is succulent and fine with bright fruit flavors and cherry over an elegant mid-weight texture. Annual production is 10,000 bottles.

I was surprised to find more smoke and camphor ash in the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia, along with some berry, forest floor and bramble. There's also some spice or natural rubber mingling in there. This is a bit unexpected but also more streamlined wine. It's an interesting, food-friendly Sangiovese that would be lots of fun with a platter of caciocavallo and crackers. Some 19,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia shows a rich and dense quality of fruit with blackberry, plum and dried cassis. This warm vintage is perfectly suited to the crisp flavors and bright acidity that you get naturally with Sangiovese (blended with 5% Colorino in this case). The bouquet is ample and broad with plenty of spicy rendering and dimension to pair it with grilled or roasted meats. Some 19,000 bottles were made. The wine is organic and vegan too.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino aged in large oak casks and tonneaux for up to 20 months. The wine delivers an elegant and streamlined approach but ultimately delivers more power and momentum than you might expect. It sticks firmly to the palate, with long determination awarding bright cherry, cassis and sweet spice flavors along the way. I would suggest drinking this wine within the next five years, although you could also wait longer.
