The 2014 Chardonnay Savoy comes from the clonal selections of Wente and Prosser. This is a beautiful Chardonnay with excellent caramelized citrus notes, apple blossom, some white peach and subtle pineapple, but with underlying wet rock minerality. The wine has great fruit, texture, and a full-bodied, dry finish. It was aged for 15 months in 30% new French oak prior to being bottled. It should drink nicely for up to a decade.

The 2013 Chardonnay Savoy, which is organically farmed, is a blend of mostly Old Wente clones, with some of the Prosser clone material that one sees farther north in Washington State more than California. This wine shows loads of minerality and an almost grand cru Chablis-like citrus and floral character, medium to full body, great acidity and low levels of oak, which seems to be pushed completely to the background. This wine should drink well for 5-7 years.

The 2012 Chardonnay Savoy Vineyard is made primarily from the Old Wente clone of Chardonnay, but 30% comes from the Prosser clone, which is largely seen in Washington State rather than California. A lovely white, it exhibits plenty of earthiness, white peach, honeyed citrus and a medium to full-bodied, crisp, fleshy personality. There is enough acidity to provide freshness. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. (Not yet released) An impressive portfolio of wines routinely emerges from Radio Coteau, which employs organic farming, a low SO2 regime, indigenous yeast fermentations, extended sur lie aging with very little lees stirring, and bottling with no fining or filtration. Radio Coteau’s Syrahs continue to be splendid efforts despite the doldrums the Syrah marketplace seems to be experiencing. The 2010 Chardonnay Savoy is laced with almonds, dried pears and spices. A rich, resonant Chardonnay, the 2010 Savoy impresses for its textured personality, length and balance. The predominance of the Wente clones comes through nicely, but at the same time, the 2010 has plenty of inner perfume and lovely overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. This lineup from Radio-Coteau and proprietor Eric Sussman was among the most thrilling I tasted this year. Radio-Coteau practices sustainable farming and hands-off winemaking, which includes native fermentations, minimal rackings and bottling without fining or filtration. What ultimately counts, though, is what is in the bottle, and more often than not, these are compelling wines that deserve serious attention.
