The Renieri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is balanced and bright, but it also shows the unmistakable power and grit of this classic vintage. Cassis and cherry are framed by fragrant balsam aromas with tarry smoke, cola and licorice. There is a glossy note here as well that recalls natural rubber, followed by pretty mineral tones that add elegance. In all, 15,000 bottles are hitting the market now.

Packed with plum, cherry, orange peel, mineral and Mediterranean scrub flavors, this red is also taut and dense. Balanced in a toned, sinewy way, shows resonant tannins on the fresh finish. The Renieri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is full, generous and wide in terms of its aromatic performance. Waves of purple and black fruit wash over the senses with black cherry, blackberry preserves and cured tobacco. This Riserva ages in large 50-hectoliter botte, and production is small with only 6,000 bottles produced. There is a touch of bitter almond, with smoked or nutty tones as well. These give the wine a darker, more savory personality. The wine structure should hold steady over the next decade or two of cellaring.

A fresh, slightly chewy version, this red shows grip to the cherry, strawberry, tar, licorice and tobacco flavors. A touch dry, this needs food to really sing.
