It seems counterintuitive to me to use the words Gran Selezione and Riserva in the same wine name since so much work was done to separate the two concepts from a legislative point of view. Indeed, Gran Selezione replaced Riserva on the top of the quality pyramid, so I admit to being a little confused here myself. Anyway, the 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva di Fizzano is a taut, mid-weight wine with pretty berry and wild cherry aromas backed by spice, tar and leather. The wine is lean and streamlined in the mouth. This is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino aged mostly in large oak casks for 12 months. Some 10% of the Sangiovese is aged in barrique instead. Production is 25,000 bottles.
