The un-oaked Rosa del Golfo 2016 Primitivo delivers plump and ripe fruit flavors with dark plum and black cherry preserves. These are bright, full flavors to enjoy with a stuffed eggplant dish. The main focus here is the purity and simplicity of the primary fruit, and although you do get some plummy sweetness, this vintage feels a little more compact and linear overall. Some 40,000 bottles were made, and you get good value here.

Aged for a brief six months in oak, the 2014 Primitivo is a dark and brawny red wine that offers sweet fruit aromas and traces of residual sugar. The wine's texture is thick and luscious. Its velvety textural richness wraps thickly over the palate. Indian spice and crushed clove converge with concentration on the finish.

Aged for six months in botte grande, the 2013 Primitivo shows fresh fruit characteristics with loads of cherry, blackberry and plum. This was a slightly cooler vintage and the quality of fruit presented here is sharper and more linear compared to the warmer 2011 vintage. You get that trademark Primitivo sweetness in the mouth and the wine closes with pretty accents of spice and toasted nut. This Primitivo would make an excellent pizza pairing wine.

Rosa del Golfo's IGP 2011 Primitivo is a dark and jammy red wine with plump, chewy consistency and opulent aromas of dried blackberry, cherry and prune. The quality of fruit is soft and mature but not particularly nuanced or elegant. That in-your-face personality is also reflected in the mouth where the wine shows soft tannins and sweet richness.
