The 2009 Barbicone is gorgeous in this vintage. Dark cherries, flowers, spices and licorice waft from the glass in this refined red. The 2009 boasts great purity in a highly appealing, medium-bodied style that places more of an emphasis on elegance than some previous years. There is remarkable freshness and vibrancy in this Sangiovese-based red. This is a great, great showing. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. These are the finest wines I have ever tasted from Russo. The 2008 Barbicone is an attractive, fleshy wine laced with black cherries, tobacco, flowers, plums and tar. It possesses lovely mid-palate richness and a long, persistent finish. Barbicone is 80% Sangiovese, and 20% Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Canaiolo and Giacomino that spent one year in French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Russo’s 2007 Barbicone is predominantly Sangiovese with a dash of Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Canaiolo and Giacomino. Sweet candied cherries, underbrush, tobacco and anise are some of the nuances that emerge from this bold, racy red. The warmth of Suvereto and the vintage has resulted in an unusually plump, juicy Sangiovese-based wine. This shows superb richness and depth in a mid-weight, yet generous style. The wilder side of Sangiovese makes an appearance from time to time, but not enough to detract from the wine’s considerable appeal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
