The 2009 Sasso Bucato wraps around the palate with subtle layers of radiant dark plums, tobacco, licorice and menthol. The aromas and flavors flesh out beautifully on the mid-palate and finish. This is another impeccable, harmonious wine from Russo. Sasso Bucato is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. These are the finest wines I have ever tasted from Russo. Consulting oenologist Marinka Polencic spent three years working alongside Alberto Antonini. She is now taking Russo to even greater heights. The estate’s 2008 Sasso Bucato is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot that spent 16 months in French oak. Interestingly, it shows more red fruit and floral notes than the Sangiovese-based Barbicone. Licorice, sweet spices, crushed flowers and berries wrap around the delicate finish. The 2007 Sasso Bucato (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals an intriguing melange of mineral-infused black fruit, violets and French oak. Suvereto is one of Maremma’s warmer microclimates and the Sasso Bucato comes close to the edge when it comes to ripeness, yet retains just enough freshness to provide balance in a juicy, highly appealing style. The 2006 Sasso Bucato is a dense, full-bodied wine redolent of smoke, grilled herbs, plums and dark cherries. The wine offers good length and density, even if the tannins could use a touch more polish. That said, this energetic wine continued to improve with air.
