This Riserva expression of 3,000 bottles opens to candied or oxidized fruit, driven in large part, I assume, by the scorching heat and dry conditions of this vintage. The San Quirico 2017 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Isabella (made with organic fruit) opens to a saturated golden color with dried apple skin, apricot and butterscotch. Dusty mineral tones appear on the close. Unfortunately, this vintage falls flat.

Here's a wine that deserves a second look. It's hard to image drinking a Vernaccia almost one decade from the harvest, but this wine demonstrates this very interesting and real possibility. The 2006 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Isabella (made from organic grapes) exhibits an impressive level of complexity and finesse with stone fruit, poached pear and dried apricot. The wine also shows bright freshness and pretty mineral nuances on the close. This wine is aged in large oak casks for two years.
