The organic Sassotondo 2019 Maremma Toscana Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo blew me away. This wine will be released next spring to allow it to finish time in bottle. Made with the best fruit selected from 60-year-old vines planted in a gorgeous vineyard with volcanic soils facing the postcard-perfect town of Pitigliano, you get so much character, depth and authenticity. Ciliegiolo ages in botte grande for 24 months, and only 2,000 bottles were produced. Dark cherry and sweet blackberry are framed by white pepper, spice and an etched note of flint, graphite and volcanic ash. This red wine is racy, exceptionally bright and packed with vibrant fruit energy.

Thanks to some slightly green tannins, this vintage lags behind the others presented in this mini vertical. The Sassotondo 2018 Maremma Toscana Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo shows cherry, dried raspberry, white pepper and etched graphite or flint. There is an almost carbonic note of punchy fruit. The growing season experienced bouts of downy mildew, and yields were reduced as a result. Fruit is sourced from across the 3.6-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at 300 meters in elevation.

Like the 2019 vintage also reviewed here, the Sassotondo 2017 Maremma Toscana Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo boasts dark color saturation and concentrated fruit, but in the case of this wine, you get softer, more open-knit tannins. Ciliegiolo can famously live up to the hot vintages, especially when the variety is planted in cooler volcanic soils like the kind found in this vineyard cru. The slightly evolved bouquet shows cherry liqueur, almond paste, blue flower and crushed stone. There is a lively, almost nervous quality of the fruit that keeps things edgy and fresh. The mid-weight finish is silky and long.

This vintage from Sassotondo's 50-year-old San Lorenzo vineyard is smooth and more integrated than the other editions presented in this mini vertical. Lessened, however, are the punchy high-toned notes that give this grape so much character and vitality. The 2016 Maremma Toscana Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo reveals dried cherry and wild rose, and there is a more robust or ripe quality to the fruit overall. The effect is whole and round, with spicy end notes of nutmeg and black pepper.

First produced in 1997, this is one of the best vintages made. The Sassotondo 2015 Maremma Toscana Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo offers length and terrific balance, and the wine counts down the entire playlist of what makes this grape so special and interesting. There is bright, punchy fruit, lots of integrated freshness, velvety tannins and plenty of volcanic character with etched stone and campfire ash. This vintage is especially elegant in terms of its smooth texture and careful tannic management.
