The 2010 Sovana Rosso possesses striking energy and focus as it flows across the palate with dark cherries, mint, new leather and violets. All of the elements are beautifully balanced. Veins of underlying minerality give the wine its vibrancy. This is another great showing from Sassotondo. Even better, the Sovana Rosso is a fabulous value. The 2010 is 60% Sangiovese, 30% Ciliegiolo and 10% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
Sassotondo is another of the Tuscan properties that routinely turns out fabulous wines but seems to get little recognition. The estate has made a speciality of Ciliegiolo, a native red variety that is not seen too often.
