The 2008 Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo emerges from the glass with sweet red cherries, mint, flowers, spices and licorice. This is a mid-weight San Lorenzo built on energy, vibrancy and freshness more than sheer body, all qualities that are typical of the year. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Sassotondo is another of the Tuscan properties that routinely turns out fabulous wines but seems to get little recognition. The single-vineyard 2006 Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo is darker, richer and deeper than the regular Ciliegiolo bottling. Two years in French oak confer an additional measure of structure and volume as well, but without completely masking varietal character. The single-vineyard 2005 Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo is made in a super-ripe style. Medium to full in body, the wine reveals impressive richness and depth in its dark fruit, leather and spices but also shows early signs of oxidation that suggest it won’t be particularly long-lived. The 2004 Ciliegiolo San Lorenzo is elegant, sweet and refined, with notable clarity in its well-articulated aromas and flavors.The San Lorenzo spent 24 months in French oak, but you would hardly know it judging by the way the dark red fruit and oak are beautifully woven into the wine’s fabric. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019. Sassotondo is another of the small properties making terrific wines under the direction of consulting oenologist Attilio Pagli.
