This offering possesses a certain rusticity revealing an unexpected Amarone-like character that gives it considerable personality. A terrific value in serious, old vine Shiraz, the 2001 Shiraz Block 3 is a 3,000-case offering from 60-year old vines. Its inky purple color is followed by a sweet perfume of blackberries, saddle leather, earth, and licorice. As it sits in the glass, truffle-like scents also emerge. Full-bodied, chewy, thick, and juicy, with tremendous concentration, well-integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol, and no evidence of oak, this brawny, quasi-civilized offering should be even more impressive with another 6-12 months of bottle age.
