From a distinct parcel with the steepest slope in the Treppchen, the -three star- 2006 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese (which was destined for the Bernkasteler Ring auction) displays white raisin, caramel, brown spices and honey but also bright citrus character. Imposingly rich and oily, and with unquestionably pure botrytis as well as unblemished over-ripe fruit character, it is also somewhat swamped for now by its sheer sweetness. The springs of future refreshment are present in the wine's citricity, but one can expect to wait a decade just to see appreciable diminution in the perceived sweetness. A measure of the advantages of a small, ambitious family winery with lots of local connections, Schmittges was able to pick his entire crop in just nine days.Importers include: Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA tel.
